Hexagone Group is an independent wealth management firm headquartered in Paris, with offices in Shanghai and Dubai. As Vice-President at Hexagone Group, I help French professionals and families in Asia plan for retirement, manage their savings and navigate international tax matters. Having spent more than 20 years in Asia, including several years in Shanghai, I understand the challenges of managing finances across borders. My role is to help clients make informed decisions and build a financial strategy that fits their lives, both abroad and when they eventually return to France.
2. What are the most common blind spots you see in how French expatriates in Asia plan their finances?
One of the biggest issues is retirement planning. Many people don't know exactly what pension rights they have accumulated in France or how their years abroad may affect their future income. I also meet people with substantial savings sitting in cash without a clear long-term plan. Tax is another important consideration, especially when moving between countries or returning to France. My advice is to take a step back and look at the bigger picture: retirement, savings, tax and family plans. A little preparation today can make a real difference later.
3. For a French national living in Taiwan, what should they understand about their retirement, both their French pension rights and options such as retraite par capitalisation and the CFE?
包括法國退休金權益,以及提存式退休儲蓄(retraite par capitalisation)與 CFE(Caisse des Français de l'Étranger,法國旅外人士社會保險機構)等選項。
Start by checking your French pension record and understanding the rights you have already accumulated. Working in Taiwan does not automatically mean losing existing French pension rights, but the impact of overseas employment depends on your situation. The CFE may also be worth considering, although health coverage and pension arrangements are separate matters. Finally, building personal savings through regular investments can help complement your future pension. The key is to plan early, taking into account your career, tax situation and where you expect to retire.
4. Many expatriate families plan for their children to attend university in France or elsewhere. When should they start preparing, and what approaches work best?
My advice is to start as early as possible. International education can be expensive, with tuition, accommodation, living expenses and travel all adding up. Regular savings contributions can make the cost easier to manage. The investment strategy should reflect the time available: a longer horizon allows more room for growth, while protecting the capital becomes increasingly important as university approaches. Plans can change as children grow up, so flexibility matters too. Starting early gives families more choices and avoids having to find a large amount of money at the last minute.
5. Having worked with clients in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Dubai, what do you see as specific to the situation of French residents in Taiwan?
Having worked with French clients in different parts of Asia, I have learned that there is no such thing as a typical French expatriate. In Taiwan, some people work for international companies, others are employed locally, and some run their own businesses. Their pension rights, benefits and tax situations can differ significantly. As in other parts of Asia, savings may be spread across several countries, and a return to France may be part of the longer-term plan. The important thing is to look at each person's situation as a whole rather than apply a standard solution. Financial planning should reflect individual circumstances, family needs and future plans.
6. What is the one piece of advice you would give to a French professional who has just arrived in Taiwan?
Get your finances organised early. Check your French pension rights, understand your tax situation and keep track of your savings across countries. You don't need to have everything figured out immediately. Start with clear priorities, keep some cash available for unexpected expenses and build a regular savings habit. Living abroad offers great opportunities, but a little preparation can help you make the most of them, both during your time in Asia and when you decide what comes next.
