Taiwan donates 5,000 COVID-19 rapid test kits to Czech Republic

Taiwanese manufacturer Excelsior Bio-System, Inc. (EBS) on Tuesday (Dec. 8) donated 5,000 coronavirus antibody rapid test kits to the Czech Republic under the witness of Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil.

Taiwan's representative to the central European nation, Ke Liang-ruey (柯良叡), on Tuesday handed over 5,000 antibody rapid test kits and 200,000 respirators to the Czech authorities during a donation ceremony. The test kits, which were developed by EBS, can deliver reliable results in 10-15 minutes and can be used to screen individuals infected up to seven days prior.

 

Australia thanks Taiwan for supporting its winemakers amid Chinese tariffs

The Australian Office Taipei on Thursday (Dec. 3) posted a message on Facebook expressing its gratitude to Taiwanese for supporting Australian wine producers amid newly imposed Chinese tariffs.

In a Facebook post, the Australian representative office thanked Taiwanese for their "interest and well wishes supporting Australian winemakers" and highlighted Australia's prowess in winemaking.

Tsai pledges to make Taiwan bilingual country by 2030

On Monday (Nov. 23), President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) pledged that the government would do everything in its power to achieve the goal of turning Taiwan into a bilingual country by 2030.

During the first consultation meeting of the "Bilingual Nation by 2030" policy on Monday, Tsai said the government is "sparing no effort" to turn Taiwan bilingual within 10 years, reported Taiwan Today. Tsai stressed that reaching a high degree of English proficiency is "key to raising Taiwan's profile abroad."

She added that striving to reach this goal will both "enable younger generations to better connect with the world" as well as better promote Taiwan's success battling the Wuhan coronavirus.

 

Taiwan legislature forms new caucus to promote ties with France

A total of 55 lawmakers from different parties formed a legislative caucus on Tuesday (Oct. 27) to promote ties with France.

Tsai Shih-ying (蔡適應) from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will be the chair of the Taiwan-France Parliamentary Amity Association. He remarked at the inaugural ceremony on Tuesday that the establishment of the Taiwan-France parliamentary friendship group is aimed at facilitating interactions among governments and civil groups of the two countries.

According to Tsai, lawmakers had originally planned to visit France this year, but the plan was postponed due to the pandemic. Tsai expressed hope that the trip will be made next year and that Taiwanese and French lawmakers will have direct exchanges.

Taiwan-US relations cause China to dial up propaganda

 As Taiwan and the U.S. drift closer, China has stepped up its propaganda online and through state media.

The propaganda, along with several military exercises over the past few months, including the test-firing of ballistic missiles and frequent buzzing of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ), is meant to warn the U.S. that China would not back away from a military confrontation, according to The New York Times. While the chances of actual war breaking out remain small, recent military actions in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea increase the likelihood that an intended or accidental clash could occur.

Military delegation from Taiwan to visit Germany, Belgium

Taiwan is boosting exchanges with European countries in defense areas, with a delegation set to visit Germany and Belgium in 2021.

According to the defense budget plan for 2021, a mission comprising six officials from the nation’s military will be traveling to the two European countries on an eight-day “international security cooperation and research” tour. A total of NT$1.03 million (US$35,115) in funds was earmarked for the military exchange.

A group of U.S. senators on Thursday issued a joint letter to House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling on her to invite Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

It was announced Wednesday that Taiwan has donated US$500,000 to an NGO fighting sexual violence and supporting reconstruction efforts in a part of the world devastated by ISIS terrorism.
