Opening Ceremony of the Virbac Pingtung R&D Center

Prioritising the local talent pool and biotechnology in facing animal health challenges.

The Animal Health Industry is facing important challenges as a result of the need for mass vaccination, improved food safety, increased international trade and growing political/consumer pressure to reduce antibiotic and parasitic treatment.

Due to the rapid evolution of prevention needs, particularly vaccines, on a global scale, Virbac had to adapt our R&D capacities for both existing products and new vaccines in order to better respond to the demand. An essential step in this transformation plan was the construction of a new state-of-the-art R&D center for vaccine development in Taïwan.

Virbac has a long standing presence in Taiwan and has been able to draw considerable benefits from the country’s advanced infrastructure and strong innovative industries and it quickly became evident that the PABP Science Park in Pingtung would be a logical choice to house the facility. Through this project, Virbac is investing in Taiwan to meet future needs in animal health and further strengthen the long term relationship with NPUST University and ATRI. Virbac is also keen to maintain and develop the skills and know-how of current and future employees from the regional pool.

The main objectives of the R&D center will be to develop innovative vaccines and immune-stimulants, fight new diseases, and/or improve existing products in terms of efficacy, safety and ease of use for all species on a domestic, regional, and global scale, thereby creating a center of excellence for R&D in South East Asia. More specifically, the R&D activities will concentrate on the development of upstream and downstream processes and validated analytical tools. The ultimate objective of these activities is the mastering, registration and transfer of products to our Manufacturing facilities worldwide. This project will also bring positive spin offs to Taiwan thanks to the safeguarding of know-how in biological biotechnologies.
